Press Release: Statement on Germany’s crackdown of a network of human trafficking and organised crime related to Thai nationals
On 18 April 2018 Germany’s Federal Police started a nationwide crackdown on forced prostitution and a network of human trafficking and organized crime. The raids led to the detention of more than 100 people including Thai nationals.
The Royal Thai Embassy in Berlin recognised the seriousness of the problem and follows up the on-going investigation closely with the Federal Police and the Federal Ministry of Interior (BMI). In this regard, the Royal Thai Embassy, together with the Royal Thai Consulates-General in Frankfurt a. M. and in Munich, has been cooperating closely with various German authorities, i.e. the Federal and State Police, the Attorney General’s Office Frankfurt a. M., as well as local NGOs. In the last few months, the Royal Thai Embassy and the Royal Thai Consulates-General have rescued 6 Thai nationals who are victims of trafficking.
The Royal Thai Embassy and the Royal Thai Consulates-General attach great importance to combating human trafficking. We support anti-human trafficking efforts in the Thai communities through public awareness campaigns about the risks and consequences of human trafficking and cooperate with Thai NGOs and Thai Buddhist temples in Germany to ensure that the communities are well informed.
Combating human trafficking has been Thailand’s national priority. Thailand is committed to playing an active role in the promotion of anti-human trafficking efforts. The Royal Thai Embassy believes that protection and prevention approach is one of the best ways to address the challenges of human trafficking in a comprehensive and sustainable manner. We aim to strengthen public-private-civil society partnership and push for more effective implementation among relevant stakeholders to tackle the problem. To provide assistance to Thai nationals, the Ministry of Foreign Affair, the Royal Thai Embassy and the Royal Thai Consulates- General set up 24-hour Hotline and emergency numbers. Furthermore, Thai nationals can also send inquiries and seek help from Thai authorities in Germany via e-mail and social media.
